The Centre Communautaire Francophone (CCF) is expanding its reach in Sarnia-Lambton with new programming designed to bridge the gap between English and French speakers. French Service Navigator Lo-Anne Chan and Project Coordinator David Lauzier recently shared how the centre is evolving to meet the needs of a growing bilingual community.
One of the primary offerings this winter is a series of conversational French classes beginning in mid-January. The sessions are designed for two distinct skill levels and will be held at 3-901 Promenade The Rapids. These classes provide a local opportunity for residents to improve their language skills for professional or personal growth.
The upcoming schedule for French classes includes:
Beginners: Thursdays at 7 p.m., starting January 15 Intermediates: Tuesdays at 6 p.m., starting January 13 Cost: $130 for a 10-class session
Beyond traditional classrooms, the CCF is launching a bilingual podcast in the new year. This project was developed after community feedback revealed that many local professionals have French backgrounds but lack the confidence to practice. The podcast will feature bilingual conversations that residents can listen to on their own time to build familiarity with common phrases.
The centre is also encouraging local businesses to make their spaces more welcoming to Francophone clients. Through their "Bibliothèque" initiative, the CCF provides French reading materials for waiting rooms. This effort aims to demonstrate a commitment to the active offer of French services across Sarnia-Lambton's professional landscape.
For those looking to engage more deeply with the community, the CCF offers free membership which grants access to various activities and services. Residents can stay updated on events such as the upcoming "Patin sur glace" on December 30 by following the centre's social media channels or visiting their website at ccfsarnia.com.
