A hidden gem in our community, the Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Kiwanis Club

Recently, I joined the local Sarnia-Lambton Golden K Kiwanis club. What a great organization! Without having joined, I would have had no idea just how much they do. Their programs focus on children and their fundraising is in support of these.

These programs include the following in-school programs –
Math tutoring, science demonstrations, literacy coaching, in-school Kiwanis clubs known as Builders clubs and Key clubs which promote leadership skills and community service, Terrific Kids character building program, contribute to and prepare snacks in 3 schools, involve students in biodiversity plantings on the school grounds.
Fund raising to support the above programs include –
Selling Claxton Christmas cakes, can and bottle recycling, perform jobs largely for seniors for donations, Maple Syrup sales and volunteering with charitable gaming at Jackpot Time.
Other activities include –
Volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels for the Red Cross, offer free books to children aged 1-5 years through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, preparing and serving meals at the Inn of the Good Shepherd, club support for club sponsored Aktion club in conjunction with Sarnia Lambton Community Living.
The club routinely makes donations to various youth groups, such as Harmony for Youth, Literacy Lambton, Boys and Girls Club, St. Clair Child and Youth Centre and others.

Our club members assist with the daily operation of the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre as a nonprofit for the city of Sarnia as members of the Sarnia Kiwanis Foundation. The centre provides space for various youth organizations and non-profits.

I might just mention that we meet every Tuesday morning at 9:30am at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre and start out with a speaker. So, if you are recently retired and need to get off the couch or working out some of life’s challenges and inclined to offer your time for children and the community we have a space for you. I must stress that no commitments are required. Just find an interest whether it is working with children in the schools or painting or doing a maintenance job, we have a place for you.

This club has roughly 70 members, and I just cannot believe how much they accomplish. Everyone is so willing to get involved and so supportive of one another. Camaraderie being a great side benefit.

Thank you, Kiwanis for all you do!
