In the last issue’s letter to the editor, the writer reported having an "aha moment" regarding the temperament and communication skills of Councillor Bill Dennis. While the observation was noted, this realization seems late for those who have followed local politics over the last decade.
Before his time on council, Bill Dennis was a loud and supportive ally to Mayor Mike Bradley during investigations into the Mayor’s conduct at city hall. At that time, Dennis threw his full support behind the Mayor. After being elected, there was a visible "honeymoon" period where the two appeared closely aligned on city policy and safety protocols.
Eventually, the professional relationship soured. We saw this shift begin during discussions on diversity training and culminate in a recording where the councillor commented on previous harassment findings at city hall. This was followed by multiple Code of Conduct violations and a suspension from city hall.
The recent outbursts are not new developments. They are part of a long-standing pattern of behavior that has defined this era of municipal governance. Welcome to the real world of Sarnia politics.
