A new horror film with deep local roots is set to make its debut in Chatham next month. Fresh Meat, the latest feature from Canadian-Chilean filmmaker Daniel Turres, will premiere November 1 at the historic Capitol Theatre.
Turres, who was born in London, Ontario, and now lives in Chatham, is known for his bold, genre-bending approach to horror and action filmmaking. A graduate of Toronto Film School and BealArt, he directed his first feature, Terry’s Car Gets Stolen, at just 18 years old. During the pandemic, he gained national attention with Here for Blood, a horror-action hybrid that swept six awards at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, including audience choice recognition.
His latest project, Fresh Meat, was filmed in Chatham, including scenes shot inside the city’s historic jail cells. The production incorporated extensive participation from local creatives — with Canadian actors, crew members, and artists making up much of the team. Turres has become known for highlighting regional talent and using familiar Southwestern Ontario backdrops to showcase the area’s growing creative community.
Described as a high-energy mix of dark comedy, practical effects, and relentless action, Fresh Meat is the filmmaker’s most ambitious project yet. The film will debut exclusively in Chatham before heading to the U.S. market and then to international audiences.
The special screening will take place at the Capitol Theatre, a fitting venue for the atmospheric premiere. Doors open early for the 7 p.m. showtime. Tickets are available through the Capitol Theatre box office.
