Why Your Home’s Aesthetic Is Critical to Your Well-Being

Home components that lead to emotional well-being, defining characteristics that are essential to a peaceful and sustainable home.

The relationship between your home’s appearance and your own well-being is often sorely overlooked. Regardless of where you live, you're still the same person in the end. Right? Wrong. Your home’s style, design, and cleanliness affect your emotional (and even physical) health very strongly. We often don’t take the time to think about this because we are too busy running around all the time.

It pays to sit back and think about the way your home looks and feels. A home that doesn’t speak to you physically is one that you will start to resent over time. And there are distinct components that you should pay attention to. Calgary and its surroundings are a beautiful area; you should take advantage of it.

Your home’s location

Your home's location plays a huge role in your overall sense of well-being and happiness. While not everyone has the luxury of choosing their home's location, it is definitely something you should think about.

There are many ways in which your location can affect your emotions:

  • Whether you have a long and difficult commute to work. It is a matter of personal preference, of course, whether you want to live in the suburbs or not. Some people create a routine for themselves that works, but others would rather be in the center of things so that their commute time is short and they have more time for other things.
  • Proximity to nature. It is a known fact that nature has a positive effect on our psyches. Being able to look out of your windows Calgary and to observe and easily get out into the woods or mountains can do wonders for your emotional health. While this isn't an option for everyone, being close to nature can be a great option for those with flexibility.
  • Crime rate. The level of safety in your neighborhood or region is very important. This is true especially – but not only – if you have kids. Whether we realize it or not, knowing that crimes take place around your home makes us all tense to some degree.

The size of your home

You need to choose a home that is the right size for you (and if you have a family, for all of you). Keep in mind the following points:

  • A home that is too big can feel overwhelming for many people. It is hard to get a feeling of coziness when you feel like you are lost inside a giant mansion. Big homes can also be complicated to maintain, which can also add to your stress level.
  • Conversely, a home that is too small can make you feel irritated. Just as overly-cluttered rooms can cause you annoyance, so too can rooms that feel too constricting.

Every person will have their own comfort level with regard to their home. The trick is to figure out what works best for you. If you were raised in a particularly large or small space, perhaps this is what you will feel most comfortable in. The key is to find your personal sweet spot.

Your home's interior

Last but not least, we have interior design. While some self-proclaimed “design freaks” might be very much in touch with their aesthetic preferences, many people are not. Whether you need a particularly decorative home to feel happy when you walk into it or simply a clean one is up to you. But each of us needs something in particular.

Consider the following:

  • What your sources of light are. Do you have sufficient natural light coming into your Canadian windows? Perhaps getting new windows or repositioning your furniture could help with this. Artificial lights can be nice, too, but they should be positioned in such a way that gives you a sense of peace.
  • Color choices. It is a known psychological fact that different colors have different effects on people's moods. You might pick different colors for different rooms depending on what you do in them, for example a bright color in the kitchen and a darker one in the bedroom.
  • How you organize your furniture and other belongings. While there is a particular theory to feng shui, every person has their own priorities with regard to organization. Just be sure that you arrange your things in such a way that makes you comfortable and not irritated. Purging excess stuff can be a remarkably satisfying experience, by the way.

Lifestyle requirements

A lot of being happy in your home also depends on your particular lifestyle requirements. Do you do yoga in the morning? Do you need to cordon off space for the kids? Perhaps you do design-related work and need space to arrange your drafts.

Again, this is all up to you. But you should think carefully about your available space and what will give you the freedom to carry out your daily tasks without losing or risking damage to things. Then you will be happy and content in your personal space.
