Canada’s MAID framework balances compassion with safety

Allan McKeown clarifies his stance on psilocybin regulations and Medical Assistance in Dying while offering support to the Pearson family.

I offer my thanks to Dr. Blake Pearson for clarifying that his motivation for requesting a special exemption from Health Canada to prescribe psilocybin for his father was to alleviate his anxiety and not to prolong his life.

In fact, in my letter I clearly stated that this was indeed the probable intended purpose.

The lack of clarity was the result of the misleading reporting in the article which stated: “but the irony that the government agrees he is eligible to die, but not eligible to try a therapy to help him live, has become the centre of a national advocacy battle.”

My letter attempted to address other possibly confusing elements in the article, including the reason why Health Canada restricts the prescribing of psilocybin and why Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) is approved relatively quickly for patients whose conditions meet all the medical and legal criteria.

As I shared in my letter, I lost a very close friend last year to the same terminal disease that afflicts Mr. Pearson. I was grateful that his MAID application was quickly approved. It put my friend’s mind at ease and allowed him to die with dignity and peace.

I offer my support and compassion to Mr. Pearson at this most challenging time and I appreciate very much the love and care that his son provides to his father.

I think we could agree, however, that the article did not provide sufficient context for the several complex issues addressed and that was my motivation to write to the Sarnia Journal.

It is perhaps worthwhile restating the actual conclusion in my letter:

“Canadians are fortunate to live in a country where we can access Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) should we need it. Canada’s MAID framework and pharmaceutical approval process both exist to balance compassion with safety and evidence-based decision-making. These considerations could have been more fully addressed in the article.”

Respectfully,

Allan McKeown
