A reader argues that mayoral candidate Bill Dennis struggles to maintain composure in unscripted moments, citing a recent interaction regarding housing statistics.

Editor,
I learned something about Bill Dennis recently that changes everything about how I see his mayoral campaign. Maybe some readers already understand this, but I'm going to say it anyway.
Dennis takes himself more seriously than anyone else in Sarnia politics. When he appears to be joking online, he's not smiling behind the screen. He's obsessing over his image and desperately trying to control the narrative.
This becomes obvious in any situation he can't control. Without his scripts or ability to block critics, he falls apart into rambling, stuttering, and personal attacks.
What made this clear was watching the recent council meeting where the CAO corrected Dennis's housing statistics. Dennis completely fell apart. He rambled incoherently, repeated "the fact of the matter is" over and over, made personal attacks, and couldn't articulate a single coherent policy response.
When challenged on facts he hadn't prepared for, his entire persona collapsed. This is someone who wants to be mayor.
The contradictions reveal everything. He rails against the establishment while publicly complaining about not receiving the mayor's Christmas card. He champions "regular people" while desperately seeking approval from those more successful than him.
He shares Sproink's satirical illustrations pretending to laugh along, then blocks the people who find them unironically accurate. This isn't confidence. This is someone obsessed with image management who can't handle even mild criticism.
Dennis needs two things he can't reconcile. He needs approval from his "regular people" base AND approval from the successful people he wants to mirror. He name-drops being a top realtor while attacking actual professionals.
He wants to be taken seriously as a leader while his behavior consistently proves he's not ready for that responsibility. This gap between what he wants and what he actually is defines his fundamental unsuitability for leadership.
Here's what I think voters need to understand. Mockery and ridicule reveal Dennis's core weakness because he has no counter-move for it. He can't prepare for genuine criticism, can't script around unexpected challenges, and can't hide how deeply it affects him.
When he shares those satirical illustrations pretending to laugh, remember he's not smiling when he clicks share. He's proving he's thinking about it constantly and can't let it go.
Before casting your vote in October, I urge you to watch Dennis in unscripted settings. Attend a council meeting. Watch how he responds to unexpected questions.
See what happens when he doesn't have a prepared script. Ask yourself honestly: can this person handle the daily pressures of mayoral leadership, or does his entire persona collapse the moment he loses control?
Sarnia needs a mayor who can work collaboratively with council and staff, manage crises calmly, and lead professionally under pressure. We deserve better than someone who needs everything scripted and falls apart when reality intrudes.
We deserve better than an anxious mess who can't handle being corrected on basic statistics. Watch him in action before you vote. The real Bill Dennis reveals himself every time he loses control.
