Bluewater Boxing Club members won five medals — including three gold — at the Brampton Cup on Feb. 1-3.
The Brampton Cup is Canada’s longest running and largest boxing tournament and features matches in three rings at once, with hundreds of competitors including international entrant from as far away as Australia.
Bluewater’s Max DeCiantis scored a first-round TKO win for gold. She had moved up a weight class (to the youth 54kg bracket) due to a lack of competition, and the gamble paid off. The referee intervened quickly out of concern for her opponent.
Kaitlyn Clark won silver in the elite open 69kg category. The former national team member with 70 matches under her belt lost a close one to Charlie Kavanaugh of New Brunswick, the reigning youth world champion competing in her first year as an elite (AKA adult).
Another Bluewater veteran, Dylan Taylor (elite open 69kg), took bronze after a contentious split decision loss in the semi-finals. His opponent was unable to compete in the gold medal match, apparently due to concussion symptoms.
Nicole ‘Vito’ Drury (elite novice 64kg) gutted out a close unanimous win in the semi-finals and was razor sharp in her gold medal bout to earn a TKO in the final round.
Drury ran her record to 6-1 with 2 KOs and three tournament gold medals.
Nick Lord (elite novice 64kg) set the tone early in his final bout, setting a fast pace en route to a decisive victory and another gold for the Bluewater club.
