Canatara Park BMX track getting new asphalt surface

Work is underway to replace the aging BMX pump track at Canatara Park with a new asphalt surface. The City says the upgrade should offer riders a smoother experience while reducing long-term maintenance.

Work is underway on a new asphalt surface for the BMX pump track at Canatara Park.

The City of Sarnia announced Monday that the aging track is being replaced after nearing the end of its useful life.

The new surface is expected to offer riders a smoother experience while reducing the amount of maintenance required to keep the track in good condition.

The construction area will remain fenced off while the work is completed. The City has not announced an anticipated reopening date.

Officially known as the Seaway Kiwanis BMX Track, the facility is located south of the Children’s Animal Farm at Canatara Park, 1200 Lake Chipican Drive.

The track is one of two municipal BMX facilities in Sarnia. The Cox Youth Centre BMX and Skate Park at Tecumseh Park, 334 Russell St. S., remains another option for local riders while the Canatara work is underway.

Sarnia’s BMX and skate facilities normally operate seasonally from April through October, weather permitting. The City requires riders to wear helmets, elbow and wrist guards, and kneepads.

The City thanked riders and other park users for their patience during construction.
