Catch the Ace is cancelled for week 45, Thursday, July 16

Sarnia Legion Branch 62 has cancelled its popular Catch the Ace draw for week 45 on Thursday, July 16, citing poor air quality from wildfire smoke.

Sarnia Legion Branch 62 has postponed this week’s Catch the Ace draw, prioritizing the health and safety of its community amid hazardous air quality caused by wildfire smoke drifting across southwestern Ontario.

The progressive jackpot fundraiser, which has drawn hundreds of local residents weekly and generated significant support for Legion programs and Sarnia-Lambton causes, will not proceed on Thursday, July 16. Organizers pointed to their expanding safety plan, which now requires cancellation when air quality reaches dangerous levels.

To thank patrons who may have planned to attend, the Ladies Auxiliary’s Pinks Kitchen is providing a free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the purchase of a beverage, while supplies last. Karaoke night remains scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Environment Canada and provincial air quality monitors have issued high-risk warnings for Sarnia-Lambton, with readings hitting 10+ on the Air Quality Health Index due to smoke from fires in northwestern Ontario.

This decision reflects a growing awareness in our region of the broader impacts of climate-driven wildfires, which increasingly affect daily life and community gatherings even far from the flames. The Legion, a cornerstone of local veterans’ support and social connection, continues to adapt while keeping people at the centre.

More details on rescheduling are expected to follow. Patrons are encouraged to stay informed through the Legion’s channels and to take precautions during periods of poor air quality.
