The Sarnia Celebration of Lights is calling on the community for volunteers, trucks, and strong helpers to bring the display to life for the upcoming season.
The event, which has been a local tradition, is organizing several key volunteer days to prepare the displays in Centennial Park.
Display Transport on Friday, November 1st, requires about 20 volunteers and several trucks with long trailers (14 feet or longer) to move the displays from Sandrin Services to Centennial Park.
Crane Day is scheduled for Friday, November 14th, at 9 a.m. in Centennial Park, where Sterling Crane will lift the five largest displays into place. About 20 "strong people" are needed to help guide the displays as the crane handles the heavy lifting.
Community Set Up Day is on Saturday, November 15th, at 9 a.m. in Centennial Park, needing "an army" of at least 100 volunteers for assembly. Youth are welcome to earn volunteer hours but must be accompanied by an adult.
Refreshments will be provided by Sarnia Blessings on all setup days.
The Opening Ceremonies will take place on Saturday, November 29th, at 5 p.m. at the Agora Stage in the park. The celebration will feature a Christmas Carol Concert, hot drinks, trinkets, food from Sarnia Blessings, and the official lighting of the displays. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be there, with free photos provided by Theresa Chalmers – Limitless Photography. The night will conclude with fireworks. The lights will then be on each evening from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. until New Year's Day.
Dean Holtz noted the deeper meaning of the lights, sharing that "Seeing the Lights gives me hope" is a common sentiment. He understands that their work goes "far beyond simply setting up displays," as many people express that the beauty of the lights lifts their spirits "even amidst challenging times".
