David Marshall receives Mel Osborne Fellowship Award for decades of community service

Known for delivering meals, dressing as Santa, and supporting local youth, David Marshall has spent decades quietly helping those in need across Sarnia–Lambton.

On Tuesday, August 12, the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia–Lambton Golden K presented long-time member David Marshall with the Mel Osborne Fellowship Award, one of the highest honours granted by the Kiwanis Foundation of Canada.

The award recognizes Marshall’s more than 30 years of dedicated service to the community. He has twice served as club president and has contributed to a wide range of local initiatives, including school breakfast programs, Meals on Wheels, the Inn of the Good Shepherd, and numerous Kiwanis events — including donning the red suit as Santa Claus during holiday celebrations.

“David has always chosen action over applause,” the club noted during the award presentation. “When others might judge, David has chosen to feed. When others might retreat, David has stepped forward—offering not just food, but compassion, conversation, and hope.”

One story shared during the ceremony recalled a moment when Marshall was asked why he was feeding someone else’s children. His reply: “I only know they are hungry—and I am feeding them.”

The Mel Osborne Fellowship Award is reserved for individuals who have made a significant impact on their community through Kiwanis service. For Marshall, that legacy includes thousands of meals served and countless lives touched through his humility, humour, and quiet generosity.
