The Lambton County Library has introduced a new resource designed to provide cognitive stimulation and social connection for residents living with dementia and their caregivers. These specialized Memory Care Kits are now available for borrowing across all library locations, offering a practical tool for families navigating the challenges of cognitive decline.
The initiative comes at a critical time as dementia rates continue to climb. According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, more than 500,000 Canadians are currently living with the condition. Locally, the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton played a key role in developing the kits, ensuring the materials are effective for various stages of the disease.
The collection consists of six themed kits containing a variety of books, games, and puzzles. Each kit is tailored to support individuals in the early, mid, or late stages of cognitive decline. The goal is to move beyond passive observation and encourage active engagement through reminiscing and sensory activities.
Kevin Coates, Public Services Coordinator for Collections, noted that the kits are designed to promote "reminiscing, manipulating, organizing, and sorting." These activities help maintain cognitive function and provide a bridge for social interaction between patients and those who care for them.
The launch of these kits highlights a shift toward community-based support systems that prioritize the dignity and quality of life of residents. By integrating these resources into the public library system, the county is providing a low-barrier way for families to access specialized care tools that might otherwise be cost-prohibitive.
The Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton, located at 420 East St. North in Sarnia, continues to serve as a hub for local support. They offer system navigation and education to help families understand the often-confusing structures of the healthcare system.
Residents can reserve a Memory Care Kit through the library’s online catalogue at lclibrary.ca or via the Iguana mobile app. Kits can also be requested by visiting or calling any Lambton County Library branch.
Library cards are available at no cost to anyone who lives, works, or studies in Lambton County, as well as residents of First Nations communities in Ontario. These kits represent a growing effort to ensure local institutions remain responsive to the lived realities of an aging population.
