Municipal tax hike approved

Sarnia council has approved a 3.93% municipal tax increase for the coming year, adding another $33 in property taxes on every $100,000 in residential assessment.

The $125-million spending package includes just under $21 million for policing and $17 million for fire protection.

About $18.7 million is set aside for capital projects, including upgrades to the RBC Centre and the next phases of the Centennial Park remediation.

Councillors trimmed $1.2 million from the draft budget proposed by staff.

The total property tax bill, which blends the city, county and education levies, is not yet known.

Lambton County tackles its budget in March.
