Sarnia’s 7-Eleven closes after four decades in business

A Sarnia convenience store that served the community for nearly 40 years has permanently closed amid a sweeping corporate downsizing by 7-Eleven.

The 7-Eleven location in Sarnia at 366 Christina Street North officially closed on May 26, 2026, marking the end of the store’s local operations after 40 years. The closure comes as the company’s North American operator announced plans to shut down 645 stores during the 2026 fiscal year, significantly outpacing the number of new locations expected to open.

The Sarnia closure reflects broader changes underway within the international convenience chain, which has been restructuring operations while facing softer consumer spending, inflation pressures, and changing fuel and retail trends.

Japan-based parent company Seven & i Holdings recently disclosed the planned closures in financial filings released in April. The company said some of the impacted locations would be converted into wholesale fuel operations, and underperforming stores would face closure.

7-Eleven operates more than 13,000 locations across Canada and the United States and more than 86,000 stores globally. Despite the large number of closures planned in North America, the company continues to expand in other international markets, particularly in Asia.

The convenience retailer has also been shifting its strategy toward expanded fresh food offerings and delivery services through its “7NOW” platform as it looks to modernize operations and adapt to changing consumer habits.

Economic pressures have been cited as a major factor behind the company’s North American restructuring. Financial reports released by Seven & i indicated consumer spending began softening during the 2025 fiscal year, particularly among lower-income households dealing with ongoing inflation and rising costs.

The company also projects a decline in annual revenue for the current fiscal year as broader economic uncertainty continues impacting retail and fuel markets.
