The Sarnia Community Foundation (SCF) is now accepting applications for several 2026 scholarships, providing critical financial support for local students entering healthcare, trades, and the arts.

In the latest episode of Talk About it Tuesday, SCF Executive Director Mike Barron joined the Journal to discuss the foundation’s role in Sarnia-Lambton and its ongoing efforts to lower the barriers to post-secondary education.

Barron participated in a "Fill in the Blanks" segment, highlighting how the foundation acts as a bridge between local donors and the specific needs of the community. Since its inception in 1983, the foundation has returned over $14 million to local organizations and projects.

The foundation is currently highlighting three major scholarship opportunities with upcoming deadlines in early 2026:

  • The Norma and Don Moore Memorial Scholarship: Focused on doctors or nurse practitioners. Preference is given to those intending to practice within Lambton County. The deadline is March 6, 2026.
  • The Society of St. Vincent de Paul / J & JY Trades Scholarship: Designed for students pursuing hands-on careers in the skilled trades. The deadline is March 31, 2026.
  • The Joanne Klauke-Labelle Memorial Scholarship: Supports students entering post-secondary programs for drama, music, dance, or visual arts. The deadline is April 10, 2026.

“The SCF has a number of incredible scholarships available, helping students and families lower the costs of post-secondary education,” Barron noted, adding that the foundation remains grateful for the donors who make these funds possible.

Beyond the scholarship cycle, the episode concluded with a teaser regarding an upcoming collaboration between the Sarnia Community Foundation and The Sarnia Journal. While specific details remain under wraps, the project is described as something the community can look forward to in the coming months.

By centering local philanthropy and student support, the foundation continues to challenge the financial systems that often limit local talent. This upcoming partnership aims to further strengthen the connection between community resources and the residents of Sarnia-Lambton.
