Local residents will be able to see some of the best women players in the world on Dec. 19 when the Progressive Auto Sales Arena plays host to a Canada-U.S. hockey showdown.
The National Women’s Team has announced it will play the United States in the finale of a two-game ‘December Series’ in Sarnia, starting at 7 p.m.
The series will be used to evaluate Canada’s roster for the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championship, to be played Plymouth, Mich. from March 31 to April 7.
“This will be a display of the best-on-best competition on the ice and it will give our players another opportunity to showcase their games on the international level prior to final selections later this season,” said Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs.
It will be the first time the national team has competed head-to-head in Sarnia against its chief rival. The city previously hosted the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Tickets are available for purchase online and at the Sarnia Sting box office by calling (519) 541-1717 for $20 each.
Tourism Sarnia-Lambton worked with the City of Sarnia’s parks and recreation department and the Sarnia Sting organization to bring the game to the city.
“We are all extremely excited to be part of this historic event,” said Vicky Praill, of Tourism Sarnia-Lambton.
